Name and how long you have been in the industry
Hi Everyone! My name is Megan Cabot and I have been working at MD Publishing for 6 and a half years.
How did you get into the industry? Anything that drew you in?
Funny Story! I interviewed for a marketing position with MedWrench. I was interviewed by Jayme McKelvey and Kaylee McCaffrey for this position and learned about a week later that they were not going to hire me for this role, but they did have a sales position available to apply for. I was a little discouraged but my mentor at the time told me that this was a good scenario and to apply. Which brings me to where I am today focusing on primarily TechNation and ICE. Jayme said she knew as soon as I interviewed that sales was where I needed to be and the rest is history! (Side note – Jayme did steal me from MedWrench, ha!). When I first started I knew I was going to learn a ton and maybe I would only be here for 5 years then move on to my next journey (if you know me I always have a plan). Well in the past 6 ½ years that I have been with MD Publishing life has taught me that it is beautiful, scary and is basically the most insane rollercoaster I have ever been on. I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else those years and I really love what I do, who I work with and the culture at our company.
What milestones or contributing factors helped elevate you to where you are today?
I started my career at MD Publishing as an account executive and worked my way up to Group Publisher of ICE Magazine (our imaging healthcare publication). I spend 50 percent of my time on building ICE and the other 50 percent of my time is on TechNation, our young professionals group YP at MD and our TechNation TV podcast Girls on Fire. Our young professionals group started in 2019 by myself, Kennedy Krieg and the other awesome friends of mine that I work with. Our YP at MD and TechNation’s 40 under 40 are two of my favorite achievements that I’ve been a part of since I started in 2018. I have made so many connections and have met amazing people from these two platforms and am so happy that I get a chance to help them keep growing.
What roadblocks did you have to overcome?
In 2018, when I started my career in this industry let me be very clear.. I did not know much about HTM. Which was terrifying when you’re meeting people who are light years ahead of you and know the in’s and out’s of this community like the back of their hand. I remember a very special someone told me to not be like this person or that person, but to be Megan and that’s exactly what I did! I learned from my clients that I worked with everyday, I made friends with other young professionals in the industry through YP at MD and learned what their struggles were, and I leaned on my MD Publishing team for guidance.
What do you feel makes a great leader in this industry?
When I think of a great leader in the HTM industry I think of people that want to help others. Leaders who genuinely want to see people achieve their goals and will help them find a way to get there. Luckily what I have found working in this industry is that someone is always wanting to help or give great advice.
What advice to you have for the other women in HTM?
My biggest advice to any woman entering this industry is to ask questions, introduce yourself to other women, young professionals, leaders, etc., and to listen to what they have to say. I am so thankful to those who have helped me along my journey. If you are new to the industry please say hi, I’d love to get to know you!
