Name and how long you have been in the industry.
My name is Amy Hobbs, and I have been in the industry roughly 14+ years now.
How did you get into the industry? Anything that drew you in?
I actually got into this industry by luck. I was looking to move and started applying for jobs in Southern CA. I found a customer service position at a biomedical repair company and once I went in for an interview, I knew that this was something special and long term. I love being able to support the health care industry no matter how small the contribution.
What milestones or contributing factors helped elevate you to where you are today?
I would say that once I started with USOC it definitely elevated me to where I am today. When they first got started and still today, they treated everyone as though they were equals and pushed us to excel. Don’t settle for just being in customer service, don’t settle for just being a manager, want to get to the next step in not only your professional career but in your personal life as well.
What roadblocks did you overcome?
Honestly, the biggest one would be work-life balance. For those people that know me well, it is hard for me to sometimes step back from work. But I also felt that if I did step back, it would have shown a weakness that some of my counterparts didn’t experience. I was held to a higher standard and did not want to show that I couldn’t do the job everyone else was doing.
What do you feel makes a great leader in the industry?
Authenticity, empathy toward others, self-confidence and being myself. I feel like the path that I took can be encouraging toward other women in this industry. Make sure you are participating in as much as possible and not sitting in the background.
What advice do you have for other women in HTM?
Work hard, be confident and have the ability to dream big! Be inspiring to everyone around you!
