Hello! My name is Alex Heileman and I have been in the industry for ten years now.

How did you get into the industry? Anything that drew you in?

I began my journey in the HTM industry at the age of 16, working part-time with my dad at Ardus Medical. He believed in exposing me to various roles within the company to shape me into a well-rounded businesswoman. This early exposure to the industry ignited my passion for healthcare technology. I was incredibly fortunate to learn from one of the best in the industry. Leadership and vision have earned him recognition and respect throughout the HTM community and watching him lead has been a true blessing. However, I felt a strong need to forge my own path and discover my own identity outside of his substantial shadow.

This drive led me to pursue a career in education, where I obtained both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in English education, and dedicated myself to teaching seventh-grade English for five years. I found immense fulfillment in helping young minds grow and thrive. These years were crucial for my personal development, allowing me to “expand my wings” and gain confidence in my own abilities.

Despite my passion for education, the call to return to the HTM industry and to continue my father’s legacy proved irresistible. The opportunity to make a tangible impact on the industry and to assist others in the HTM community drew me back to Elite Biomedical Solutions. Upon rejoining Elite, I started from the ground up again by working in the Quality Department and working closely with Manufacturing and Product Development. From there, I was able to contribute more significantly to the company and earn my place as COO. Now, I work closely with my father and our dedicated team, focusing on leadership development and operational excellence. My journey has been about blending the lessons learned from my father with my own experiences to drive our company forward and make a lasting difference in the lives of those we serve.

What milestones or contributing factors helped elevate you to where you are today?

Early Career Start: At 16 years old, I began working part-time with my father at Ardus Medical. This experience laid the foundation for my understanding of the HTM industry and sparked my interest in medical solutions. Starting at such a young age instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the intricacies of the industry.

Educational Pursuits: Earned a bachelor’s degree in English education, followed by a master’s degree in the same field. These academic achievements equipped me with strong communication skills and a passion for teaching. My education also fostered critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which have been invaluable in my professional journey.

Founding Elite Biomedical Solutions: After graduating, I worked full-time for one year at Ardus Medical. Following its closure, I helped create Elite Biomedical Solutions with my father and six other dedicated professionals. During the initial two years, I focused on establishing the company’s core operations, which provided me with firsthand experience in building a business from the ground up.

Teaching Career: Transitioning to teaching seventh-grade English for five years allowed me to develop a deep sense of fulfillment in nurturing young minds. This period honed my ability to lead, inspire, and communicate effectively. Teaching also reinforced the importance of patience, empathy, and adaptability—skills that are crucial for any leader.

Return to Elite Biomedical Solutions: Upon rejoining Elite, I started in the Quality Department. This role allowed me to gain extensive knowledge in Manufacturing and Product Development. By immersing myself in these critical areas, I was able to contribute more significantly to the company and earn my place as COO. This experience underscored the importance of continuous learning and hands-on involvement in different facets of the business.

Leadership Development: As COO of Elite Biomedical Solutions, I focus on building and developing the leadership team. This role involves mentoring future leaders and ensuring operational success and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. My journey has been marked by a dedication to empowering others and driving the company towards greater heights.

Continuous Learning: My active involvement in organizations like Vistage and Women in Manufacturing demonstrates my commitment to ongoing professional development. These affiliations keep me updated with industry trends and best practices, enabling me to lead with a forward-thinking approach. Continuous learning has been a cornerstone of my growth, helping me stay adaptable and innovative in an ever-evolving industry.

What roadblocks did you have to overcome?

One of the biggest roadblocks I’ve encountered is overcoming biases in a male-dominated industry. As a woman and a mother of three, I’ve faced challenges that many of my male counterparts may not experience. There are often preconceived notions about a woman’s ability to lead, especially when balancing family responsibilities.

One of the most critical strategies I’ve used to overcome these biases is demonstrating consistent excellence and dedication in my role. I’ve worked hard to earn respect through my actions and results, proving that gender does not determine capability. Additionally, I’ve made it a point to mentor and support other women in our industry, creating a network of strong female leaders who can collectively challenge and change these biases.

Balancing work and family life adds another layer of complexity. Being a mom requires a great deal of organization and support. I’ve learned that achieving a work-life balance is not about perfection but about prioritizing and being present in the moment. At work, I focus on leading effectively and making impactful decisions. At home, I try my best to be engaged with my family, cherishing the time I spend with my children and husband.

A supportive work environment is crucial. At Elite, we’ve cultivated a culture that values flexibility and understanding. This support has been instrumental in allowing me to balance my professional and personal responsibilities. It’s important to advocate for policies and practices that support work-life balance, not just for myself but for all employees.

Ultimately, I believe being a great leader and a great mom requires setting boundaries, seeking support, and practicing self-care. It’s about recognizing that success in one area does not have to come at the expense of another. By being transparent about my challenges and sharing my strategies for managing them, I hope to inspire others to find their own balance and to challenge the biases that still exist in our industry.
