Name and how long you have been in the industry
My name is Shannon Osmer, and I have been with Tri-Imaging for approximately eight months. However, I bring with me nearly 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, having previously worked with GE and Philips.
How did you get into the industry? Anything that drew you in?
At just 15 years old, my life took a significant turn when my father suffered a brain aneurysm. This adversity pushed me to become financially independent at a young age, working two part-time jobs to help support my family. These challenges, along with my own health issues stemming from childhood illnesses and environmental factors, fueled my interest in healthcare. After graduating from high school, I began my career while attending college, starting as a receptionist at GE in Franklin, TN. Although I was initially uncertain about my career direction, but these experiences ultimately shaped my passion for healthcare and I set out to embark on my career journey.
What milestones or contributing factors helped elevate you to where you are today?
Initially I had considered being in Nursing, but I found my true fulfillment in supporting the healthcare industry from behind the scenes. At GE, I dedicated myself to my work. I progressed from a temporary position to a permanent role in the finance department. When the Franklin office closed, I was offered a transfer to headquarters in Wisconsin. Despite the challenges of being a woman in a competitive environment, I worked diligently and was promoted multiple times, ultimately concluding my tenure at GE as a Process Leader. Although my dedication to work was going strong, I had obligations that lead me back home to care for my father, who was terminally ill with cancer.
What roadblocks did you have to overcome?
After reconnecting with former colleagues, I joined Philips, where I continued to grow professionally and personally. A pivotal moment for me occurred when a family member required urgent medical attention, and I was able to coordinate a quick repair of essential equipment, ultimately saving their life. This experience reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact in healthcare.
After becoming a mother, I chose to relocate to Georgia for family support and transitioned to a different sector of the industry, focusing on chiropractic care. However, I found this role less fulfilling compared to my previous positions. Following the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, I was approached by Chris O’Toole, a former colleague from Philips, regarding an Account Manager position. I was thrilled to re-enter the industry and embrace new opportunities, despite my concerns about keeping pace with rapid changes.
What advice to you have for the other women in HTM?
Now, as a single mother to a 13-year-old daughter, I strive to demonstrate the importance of perseverance and passion. My goal is to inspire her to pursue her dreams, showing her that hard work and dedication can lead to success. Despite facing challenges along the way, I remain committed to my career and am genuinely enjoying every moment of my journey at Tri-Imaging.
