Name and how long you have been in the industry
Hello, I am Suman, and I have been actively serving the HTM industry over a decade.
Short background bio – How did you get into the industry? Anything that drew you in?
Upon graduating as a biomedical engineer, my career commenced as a Field Service Engineer (FSE) for Ultrasound devices. Within a mere couple of weeks, it became evident that this career path was indeed the correct choice.
The integration of engineering and medicine within the realm of Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) is what solidified my commitment to this industry.
What milestones or contributing factors helped elevate you to where you are today?
Relocating to a different country had a profound impact on me, both in my professional endeavors and personal growth. Interacting with women who shared similar aspirations from diverse cultural backgrounds enlightened me to the notion that the healthcare technology management (HTM) industry offers opportunities to contribute to the betterment of humanity, irrespective of the scale of one’s involvement.
What roadblocks did you have to overcome?
Being a female field service engineer posed significant challenges. Constant travel, the struggle to maintain work-life balance, societal pressure to abandon the profession, and enduring harsh weather conditions all compounded the difficulties. Rain, snow, or shine, field service engineers are dedicated to serving humanity, a principle on which the entire industry hinges.
What do you feel makes a great leader in this industry?
I firmly believe that demonstrating empathy towards one’s colleagues plays a pivotal role in fostering a harmonious work environment.
Making mistakes is inherent to human nature, yet deriving knowledge from them exemplifies true wisdom. A capable leader is not only present during career setbacks but also rejoices in their team members’ accomplishments.
What advice do you have for the other women in HTM?
Maintain resilience and concentration, aligning yourself with individuals who inspire and uplift you. Refuse to be hindered by stereotypes on your path to deserving accomplishments. Embrace change and perpetually adopt a mindset of continual learning
