Name and how long you have been in the industry.

My name is Kristin Leavoy and I have been a part of this amazing industry since 2001.

Short background bio – How did you get into the industry? Anything that drew you in?

I am an alumnus of Indiana University Bloomington where I worked for four years at the Indiana Daily Student one of the few daily student newspapers in the country. After graduating, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in print media but wasn’t looking for the constant deadlines of a daily newspaper. When beginning my job search in the Atlanta area for a media sales position, it led me to the door of MD Publishing — home of Medical Dealer magazine— the industry’s go-to resource for news and information about medical equipment.

What milestones or contributing factors helped elevate you to where you are today?

My role and job duties within MD Publishing have evolved since I first came on board over two decades ago, but one of the most impactful factors in leading me to where I am today is the decision to launch the Medical Dealer Expo in 2002. Now known as MD Expo, this bi-annual conference, along with the other three annual events we host, comprise my core job responsibilities. Being so ingrained in the event planning process motivated me to earn my Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation in 2022.

What roadblocks did you have to overcome?

I’ve been very fortunate in my career as historically, the only person standing in my way of achieving a goal, is myself! Having the confidence and motivation to tamper down the self-doubt and forge ahead has helped me achieve the goals I’ve set for myself over the years.

What do you feel makes a great leader in this industry?

In any industry, I think a person who exemplifies leadership is someone who strives to make those around them better, stronger, and more independent. Leadership is not about achieving personal accolades but instead about how your words and actions can help others achieve their goals.

What advice do you have for the other women in HTM?

Women play a vital role in this industry. Feel confident to take part in the conversation around you and let your voice be heard. Don’t underestimate your value or worth, you are an integral part of your organization’s success!
