How did you get into the industry? Anything that drew you in?
If someone had told me in junior high that I would end up in the Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) industry, I would have laughed. Back then, while other girls in my class were taking home economics, I was the lone girl in shop class, tinkering away and loving every minute of it. My father was my first teacher in the world of tools and repairs, and those early experiences sparked a curiosity in how things worked.
Fast forward to college, where the freedom was exhilarating, but the direction was unclear. I chose to major in art, a path that seemed to fit because it didn’t box me into the traditional roles, I associated with STEM fields, which at the time felt inaccessible and, frankly, quite daunting.
After college, a twist of fate led me to join the Air Force, an experience that completely turned my preconceptions on their head. It was there that I was truly introduced to the hands-on, dynamic world of STEM. The intricate work, the critical thinking, the problem-solving—it was everything I had unknowingly been preparing for throughout my life.
Looking back, every step—from helping my dad with home repairs to fighting for my place in shop class and experimenting with creativity in art—was a building block leading me toward a career in healthcare technology management. I only wish I had discovered this path sooner, but some journeys have a way of unfolding just when you’re ready for them. Sometimes, the best rides in life are the ones you never planned to take.
What milestones or contributing factors helped elevate you to where you are today?
As I reflect on the milestones that have shaped my career, my time in the military stands out as a pivotal starting point. Before heading off to basic training, I was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension, knowing that I was on the cusp of a major life change. The military not only taught me about my personal strengths and abilities but also instilled a disciplined approach to learning and problem-solving. This experience laid a solid foundation for my future endeavors.
Another significant milestone came when I joined Novasyte, a contract company that specializes in deploying professionals to various medical device companies. This role was a game-changer. It allowed me to work hands-on with a wide array of medical technologies, deepening my understanding and fueling my passion for the field. Each contract brought new challenges and learning opportunities, which were crucial in broadening my expertise and perspective.
These experiences were more than just steps in my career path; they were leaps that helped me grow professionally and personally. From the rigorous training in the military to the diverse exposure provided by Novasyte, each milestone not only made me a better HTM professional but also deepened my commitment to using technology to make a difference in people’s lives. It’s these foundational experiences that have truly elevated me to where I am today in the healthcare technology management industry.
What roadblocks did you have to overcome?
As I look back on the roadblocks in my journey, the most challenging ones have been internal. Throughout my career in Healthcare Technology Management (HTM), my own rises and dips in confidence have often stood in my way. Learning how to navigate these fluctuations and stay encouraged even in the face of uncertainty has been a significant hurdle.
Self-doubt can be a powerful obstacle, especially in a field as complex and evolving as HTM. There were moments when I questioned my decisions or my abilities to handle the challenges that came with working on sophisticated medical devices and technologies. However, acknowledging these feelings of doubt was the first step in overcoming them.
I learned to lean on my past experiences, particularly those from my military training, which taught me resilience and the importance of a disciplined, steady approach. By focusing on small victories and incremental progress, I gradually built a more consistent confidence in my skills and judgment.
Moreover, staying connected with mentors and peers in the industry provided me with the external encouragement and perspective I needed to push through tough times. Their support and insights were invaluable in helping me realize that fluctuations in confidence are common and can be navigated successfully.
Ultimately, the roadblocks I faced were not just obstacles, but opportunities to grow stronger and more assured in my role. Each time I overcame a dip in confidence, I emerged more resilient and more committed to my career in healthcare technology management.
